One Step Away is Philadelphia's street newspaper, produced and distributed by people experiencing homelessness. The monthly newspaper gives the city's homeless a voice, and has been a driving force for change and an innovative way for more people to break the cycle of homelessness since it debuted in December 2009. One Step Away's editorial board, which is comprised of men and women who are homeless or formerly homeless, as well as homelessness advocates and providers, helps determine the editorial direction of the newspaper. With news about homelessness and affordable housing, as well as creative writing, photographs, illustrations and other content, producing One Step Away each month teaches job skills, computer skills and life skills that give people the tools to rebuild themselves. The name One Step Away was chosen by the editorial board, reflecting the idea that each of us may be just one step away from homelessness, and each of the men and women producing this paper may be just one step away from independence and attaining permanent housing. The vendors you see on the city streets distributing One Step Away are men and women committed to working to change their lives, to make strides every day to attain self-sufficiency and acquire their own housing. Street vendors purchase the newspaper for 25 cents (funding the cost of printing), then distribute it on the street for a $1 donation and keep the profits, allowing individuals to start savings accounts and generate their own income. Distributing One Step Away is work that affords people opportunity, dignity and respect. Resources for Human Development, a national human services nonprofit with corporate headquarters in Philadelphia, publishes One Step Away each month.
