St. Joe’s has had ups and downs during nonconference play. But Rasheer Fleming has been ‘terrific.’
The junior from Camden tied his career high with 26 points in a win over American and leads the Hawks in several categories. "He’s really a pro, to be honest,” teammate Erik Reynolds II said.
Just two games away from closing out its nonconference slate, St. Joseph’s has been what head coach Billy Lange described as “consistently inconsistent” all season.
Senior guard Erik Reynolds II has had big games and been all but erased from the box score in others. Turnovers have ranged from as few as eight to as many as 17. Free-throw shooting has been inconsistent. The Hawks shot 23.3% from three against Central Connecticut State and 54.5% against Texas Tech.
But the one constant across each stat sheet: Rasheer Fleming.
“He’s been, since the first game, first two games, the same guy every night, [regardless] of whether the shots have gone in,” Lange said. “I thought he’s been terrific.”
In Wednesday’s 84-57 win over American, Fleming tied his career high with 26 points, one game after setting that mark Dec. 10 against College of Charleston. It was Fleming’s third game of the season with at least 20 points.
The junior forward has been a bright spot in each of the lows St. Joe’s has faced this season while also contributing in each of the Hawks’ highs.
St. Joe’s (7-4) has been riding highs and lows since the start of the season, when it lost, 73-67, to Central Connecticut State in its second game. The loss came less than a week before St. Joe’s beat Villanova at home for the first time in 13 years. Fleming put up 19 points in both of those games and added 16 rebounds and three steals to the losing effort.
The Hawks split the two-game Legends Classic at the Barclays Center in New York, with a 78-77 win over Texas Tech and a 67-58 loss to Texas. Fleming averaged 15 points across the two games with 20 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks against the Longhorns.
Fleming had a quieter game with just nine in St. Joe’s Big 5 title defense against La Salle but still contributed 10 rebounds and four assists.

On Wednesday, the Hawks shot 60.4% from the field against American, the first time since 2016 they shot above 60% in a game. The Camden native went 11-of-15 (73.3%) from the field, and had his third double-double of the season by halftime with 16 points and 11 rebounds. He also had four steals and three blocks.
“I thought I’ve been taking good shots,” Fleming said. “I’ve been working on them and practicing outside of practice. So they’ve just been going in. Other things that I’ve been doing for my teammates, just screening, making sure they get open as well, just doing all the little things, too.”
But Fleming’s contributions don’t end with his shooting and “the little things”. He also leads St. Joe’s in rebounds, steals, and blocks, giving the team “everything,” Reynolds said.
“He’s a big-time player. He’s really a pro, to be honest,” said Reynolds, who had 23 points and six assists against American. “We hold each other accountable. So I know he’s a beast.”

Last season, Fleming’s season highs in points, rebounds, assists, blocks, and steals came during Atlantic 10 play, a promising sign for the Hawks, who are approaching the start of their conference slate.
But as they prepare for a matchup against Virginia Tech on Saturday at the Palestra in their penultimate nonconference game, they’re not concerned about whether Fleming will continue to show up.
“He’s going to keep going. He’s going to keep getting after it,” Reynolds said. “You know what type of ‘Sheer’ you’re gonna get at every game.”
