A 16-year-old was shot in the back on New Year’s Eve in Chester by what appears to have been a stray bullet, investigators said Thursday.

The girl, whom police have not identified, was shot inside her family’s home on Keystone Road just after midnight. She was struck in the back and remained at Crozer-Chester Medical Center on Thursday.

Law enforcement sources said that the circumstances of the shooting were still under investigation, but that it did not appear the girl had been targeted. It’s possible that the shot came from someone firing a gun into the air to celebrate the holiday, the sources said.

David Nelson, the girl’s stepfather, told reporters outside his home that the teen was in her upstairs bedroom, playing video games, when a bullet came through the wall and hit her.

“Your home is where you’re supposed to feel comfortable and safe at,” Nelson told 6abc. “Not where you feel like you got to be ducking and dodging from incompetence and people with irresponsible weapons.”
