Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run crash in South Philadelphia
The crash left a man in his 40s dead, and police are asking for help finding the driver.
Police are looking for the driver of a tan sedan following a hit-and-run crash that killed a man in South Philadelphia on Christmas night.
About 9:35 p.m. Wednesday, a man in his 40s was walking on the 300 block of Snyder Avenue. As he almost finished crossing the street, and was in the bike lane, a driver traveling east struck him, police said.
The driver didn’t stop, fleeing east on Snyder Avenue, police said.
According to a video of the incident obtained by 6abc, a group of people in an SUV traveling nearby saw the crash and called 911.
Paramedics arrived within minutes, but the man was pronounced dead by 9:40 p.m., police said.
The investigation is ongoing, as police continue attempting to identify both the victim and the driver. In the meantime, they urge anyone with information to contact the Crash Investigation Division at 215-685-3181. Tips can be submitted anonymously by calling or texting the Philadelphia police tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477).
So far this year, 52 people have died in pedestrian-auto crashes, according to the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia.
A series of fatal crashes led Mayor Cherelle L. Parker to sign a law earlier this month banning motor vehicles from stopping in designated bicycle lanes.
