Officers on patrol arrested an armed 29-year-old man standing just feet away from the body of a 40-year-old man who had been fatally gunned down Tuesday evening in the city’s Kensington section, police said.

Just after 5 p.m., two 24th District officers in a patrol vehicle rolled up to the intersection of H and Westmoreland Streets and then heard two gunshots, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

The officers looked in the direction of the gunfire and saw a 29-year-old man holding a gun, Small said. The officers got out of their vehicle and approached the man, and then saw the 40-year-old man lying on the ground between two parked cars.

The victim, who had been shot twice in the head, was transported to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:35 p.m., Small said.

The man with the gun was taken into custody without incident, Small said.

The motive for the shooting was unclear, but the two men apparently knew each other, Small said.

Two other men who were nearby and who also had guns also were taken for questioning, Small said.

The shooting was captured on video from a police camera located right at the intersection, Small said. Police also were checking other cameras nearby for more video showing what happened.

Police recovered two spent shell casings at the scene.
