Man shot by Philly police officer after allegedly hitting another officer with a Camaro
Police were investigating a car meetup in a Target parking lot when Quron Banks, 22, allegedly fled the scene in a red Camaro, police said.
A 22-year-old man was shot by a Philadelphia police officer after he allegedly struck another officer with a Chevrolet Camaro in connection with an investigation of a car meetup over the weekend, police said Wednesday.
Quron Banks, who was treated at a hospital and then transferred to Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility, was charged with aggravated assault, causing a catastrophe, fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, riot with intent to commit a felony, and related offenses.
Banks has an active stolen-vehicle case in Philadelphia from May that also includes a charge of fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, court records show.
The 36-year-old officer who was hit by the Camaro was treated and released from a hospital. She was described as having been on the force for one year and is assigned to the 1st Police District in South Philadelphia.
On Saturday night, Philadelphia police monitoring the city for illegal car meetups learned about one occurring in a Target department store parking lot on the 4000 block of Monument Road near where City Avenue connects to Interstate 76 .
Around 11:15 p.m., officers arrived at the scene and multiple vehicles began erratically exiting the parking lot, police said. One of the vehicles was a red Camaro with an unknown Florida registration.
A lieutenant recognized the driver as someone who was known for participating in illegal car meetups in Philadelphia, police said. The Camaro was pursued by police but was lost on eastbound Interstate 76.
Police also followed other cars from the Target parking lot to Broad and Tioga Streets in North Philadelphia, and two police vehicles crashed trying to avoid cars speeding toward them, CBS3 reported. Three officers were taken to Temple University Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Police said the cars that gathered at the Target parking lot were “drag racing and doing donuts,” CBS3 reported.
Around 2 a.m. Sunday, two undercover officers assigned to the department’s car meetup detail, located the Camaro parked on Master Street near Ninth Street in North Philadelphia, police said.
The undercover officers called for marked patrol cars to the scene. The officers pulled alongside the Camaro and one officer exited his vehicle.
The Camaro immediately began moving in reverse and struck a patrol vehicle twice, police said.
An officer who had just exited a police van was struck by the Camaro, police said. The officer fell and struck her head on the ground.
One of the undercover officers drew his gun and fired one time, hitting the passenger-side window of the Camaro, police said.
The Camaro fled the scene and was pursued by police to Interstate 95. Police said the Camaro made two U-turns in the middle of standstill traffic and hit two civilian vehicles and a police vehicle.
The Camaro again fled and was pursued by police on southbound I-95, but the pursuit was terminated because it became too dangerous, police said.
Upper Darby police later located the unoccupied Camaro, which had heavy damage. The Camaro was towed by Philadelphia police.
Banks, the alleged driver of the Camaro, was located at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby Township in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his neck, police said.
The 35-year-old officer who fired the shot was described as a 14-year veteran of the department assigned to the 26th Police District in Kensington. He was placed on administrative duty pending a required internal investigation of the shooting.
Police have been cracking down on car meetups since a chaotic series of street takeovers struck across Philadelphia over a seven-hour period in September.
