A 43-year-old Philadelphia man slashed another man’s head with a box cutter on a SEPTA bus early Friday morning after the two got into a verbal altercation that turned violent, police said.

The two men got into an argument that quickly escalated when the 43-year-old, later identified as William Hall, took out a box cutter and slashed the head of the other man, 39, before fleeing, according to police.

SEPTA Police responded to the assault on a Market-Frankford Nite-Owl bus at 3rd and Race Streets around 1:40 a.m., said Andrew Busch, a spokesperson for SEPTA.

The victim, whom police did not identify, sustained a deep cut to the left side of his head and was taken to Jefferson University Hospital where he was listed in stable condition, said Police Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore.

The bus driver called SEPTA police and officers were able to quickly find Hall a few blocks away, at North Second and Wood Streets, said Busch. Hall, of the 6100 block of North Broad Street, was arrested without incident and charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person, said Vanore.

SEPTA police recovered the box cutter and also found Hall had a BB gun, said Busch. Hall also had an outstanding warrant for violating probation on a charge of receiving stolen property in Delaware County, said Vanore.
