Second man arrested in fatal shooting of Frankford convenience store owner
Siddeeq Shakoor had been on the run since July 11, when police say he and an accomplice, Kharee Simmons, shot and killed Kenneth Kennedy-McLeod while he was sweeping the floor of his store.
Police have arrested a second man who they say fatally shot a convenience store owner in Frankford during a robbery last summer.
Siddeeq Shakoor, 43, was taken into custody Wednesday and charged with murder, criminal conspiracy, robbery, and related crimes, police said. Shakoor had been on the run since July 11, when police say he and an accomplice, Kharee Simmons, shot and killed Kenneth Kennedy-McLeod, 37, early in the morning while he was sweeping his store after closing.
Simmons, 38, was arrested days after Kennedy-McLeod’s death and was also charged with murder, criminal conspiracy, and related crimes, police said. He has been detained without bail at Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility since his arrest.
On the day of the crime, police responded to a report of a shooting at the Frankford Convenience Store, across the street from the Frankford Transportation Center, and found Kennedy-McLeod lying on the floor in the back of his store, police said. The cash register was open and bills were strewn across the floor, police said.
The store owner was taken to Temple University Hospital with gunshot wounds in both shoulders and was pronounced dead less than an hour later, police said.
Surveillance footage showed that Kennedy-McLeod was sweeping up while the store was closed when he noticed a man trying to break in through the back door, police said. Another man was seen acting as a lookout, police said.
When Kennedy-McLeod confronted the two men, they pushed him back into the store and shot him, according to police. The two men then stole cash and merchandise, police said.
Friends and neighbors recalled Kennedy-McLeod as a good man who was the father of young children and had owned the store for years.
