DC and Marvel in Atlantic City

At the Atlantic City Free Public Library, comics illustrator Joe DelBeato, who has worked for both DC and Marvel, will teach the history of African Americans in comics and show kids techniques for drawing superheroes like the Black Panther and Blade.

It would take superhuman speed for a Philadelphia schoolchild to get to the Atlantic City Free Public Library in time for the 3:30 p.m. Black History Month comics workshop, being offered every Thursday this month. But any ordinary South Jersey student with an early dismissal time could conceivably get there, even without a cape.

Comics illustrator Joe DelBeato, who has worked for both DC and Marvel, will teach the history of African Americans in comics and show kids techniques for drawing superheroes like the Black Panther and Blade.

DelBeato is serious about the history part, nudging kids to delve into African culture for design inspiration — in traditional fabrics, for instance. But he's also keyed in to comics culture in a big way and shares juicy tidbits from that realm, where word on the street is that "Lost" actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje wants to play the Black Panther in a movie.

Classes are for students ages 8 to 16. The library will provide paper and supplies.

Call ahead to confirm the weather hasn't postponed it.
