Amy Griffin made two free throws with 4.3 seconds left to lift the Explorers, who won despite shooting just 31 percent from the floor. La Salle outrebounded UMBC, 45-34.
Micahya Owens scored 13 of her 17 points in the second half and Alicia Cropper added 15 for LSU (9-4).
Capree Garner scored 22 points to lead the visiting Retrievers (5-7). Dana Lewis added 14 and Taylor McCarley chipped in with 13.
