The Eagles play the Packers in the NFL’s first-ever game in South America on Friday. The Birds’ trip to São Paolo, Brazil, is historic for the league, which in recent years has expanded its international slate. But it’s not the Birds’ first game abroad. Here’s a look back at their previous five international games…

Two games — make that one game — in Mexico

In 1968, the Eagles were scheduled to play in the first international game in Mexico City against the Detroit Lions, but it was later canceled — and no reason was ever given. A decade later, in 1978, the Birds finally made the NFL’s first trip south of the border, heading to Mexico City to play the New Orleans Saints in a preseason game, a 14-7 loss. Mexico City also later hosted the first regular season game played outside the U.S. in 2005, an NFC West matchup between the Arizona Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers.

On Aug. 6, 1989, the Birds beat the Browns in a preseason game at Wembley Stadium in London as part of the American Bowl series. It also provided this amazing photo of Randall Cunningham posing in front of a Jaguar with Bernie Kosar.

The Eagles returned to Wembley on July 28, 1991 to play the Buffalo Bills in the preseason, losing 17-13.  It was the team’s second game on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, but it wouldn’t be the last.

The Birds went all the way to Tokyo on Aug. 1, 1993, to face the New Orleans Saints at the Tokyo Dome, 28-16 preseason loss. It’s the farthest the Eagles have ever played from home, but it was hardly the NFL’s first time there.

The Eagles’ only regular-season international game to date also came at Wembley Stadium, the team’s third time playing in London. This one, a 24-18 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Oct. 28, 2018, came in front of 85,870 fans.
