This Eagles fan has worn a different jersey and hat combo every day of the season. He could do it for another 164 years.

David Bergner has been collecting Eagles memorabilia for more than 30 years and has over 300 jerseys and 200 hats.

Being a fan of something is such a blessing because being a fan of anything gives your life a lot more purpose than you’ll ever know.

Those were the words playing on David Bergner’s phone as he sat in his Eagles man cave surrounded by his collection of more than 300 jerseys and 200 hats.

As the 55-year-old listened to his favorite poem being recited by Josie Balka on his cell phone, tears began to form. Bergner, a Bristol native, has been a diehard Eagles fan for 40 years.

The Eagles mean everything to him. In fact, they’ve become a part of his everyday life. Over the last 30 years, he has collected Eagles memorabilia, including jerseys and hats. This year, he decided to document his collection on social media — gaining more than 9,000 followers on TikTok and Instagram combined.

Bergner posts a video every day of the season — every single day, not just game days — wearing a different jersey and hat, and he never repeats. As of Tuesday, he’s on Day 137. That’s 137 different combinations and counting.

Bergner has so many jersey and hat options to chose from, he could keep going for another 164 years without ever missing a day.

‘It’s just an addiction’

On Sunday, Bergner wore a Saquon Barkley jersey because, “I think he’s going off,” he said in the video on his social media.

“It’s just an addiction,” he said. “I wanted to be passionate about something. That’s all. I know I have a problem. I like to say, ‘If it was alcohol, I’d be dead.’ It’s just an addiction.”

Bergner was inspired by his wife, Andrea, to post his collection.

“She was like, ‘I just want to see what you have. I don’t really know what you have in your collection,’” Bergner explained. “I do it every day and she’ll give me feedback like, ‘Today was awful, do better tomorrow.’ Lately, within the last month, she said they’ve been fabulous, they’ve been great.”

Bergner initially posted just photos on social media. Since then, he has decided to talk more in his videos, which are organized by different themes each week. One of his most successful weeks, in terms of views, came from the week he wore the jerseys of his wife’s favorite players.

“One day I wore Mychal Kendricks,” Bergner said, before explaining the significance behind it. “We went to a signing and he signed the jersey on her back and she started crying and he hugged her. So we went to see him again and he remembered her and said, ‘Oh, you’re the crier,’ and she goes, ‘Oh my gosh, he remembers me.’”

‘Like picking a favorite child’

Bergner keeps his jerseys, hats, and the rest of his Eagles memorabilia — including everything from bobbleheads to piggy banks to signed Brandon Graham game-worn cleats — in his attic man cave. Walking up the stairs, different Eagles license plates and street signs decorate each step, posters are displayed on the walls, and flags hang from the ceiling. On the right side of the room is a clothing rack full of hundreds of jerseys.

Bergner immediately spotted his most recent buy, a Barkley kelly green jersey, which he showed off in mint condition with the tags still hanging from the side. On the other end, he showed off one of the first jerseys he bought, a worn down Ricky Watters jersey from over 20 years ago.

When asked how he found his jerseys so easily, he responded, “I have them all sorted … I know right where everything is. And it’s by numbers.”

Bergner has each section organized, from Nike replicas to ones with stitched numbers. There are jerseys in midnight (and kelly) green, white, and black. There are old-school jerseys and even some silver Super Bowl jerseys. Bergner has a separate section for signed merchandise, including jerseys signed by Graham, Lane Johnson, Vinny Curry, and Michael Vick.

But there’s still one missing.

“There’s the white whale,” Bergner said. “Tommy McDonald. He was one of the stars of the 1960 team. Every time I go, it’s just way too [expensive]. I’m like I can’t swing that right now. Tommy McDonald is my white whale.”

Despite the missing McDonald jersey, Bergner has accumulated quite the collection after spending more than half his life looking for Eagles memorabilia — but he said it’s impossible for him to pick a favorite.

“I don’t really have a favorite,” he said. “You can’t pick a favorite jersey because it’s like picking a favorite child. You can’t do it. There’s not one favorite thing.”

‘They do think I’m crazy’

Bergner knows a thing or two about not being able to pick a favorite child — he has two daughters, Krystle and Mercedes, who, along with his wife, make his passion for the Birds a family affair. That was evident right from the time of their births. Both were born on Eagles Sundays.

His older daughter, Krystle, was born the same day the Eagles sacked Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman 11 times during the 1991 season. His second daughter, Mercedes, was born a little over a year later, the same day as Vai Sikahema’s legendary goal-post punch against the Giants. Both his daughters and his wife are supportive of his Eagles “addiction.” To prove it, he even has matching tattoos with his daughters — a Lombardi trophy with Eagles wings.

“They do think I’m crazy,” Bergner said. “But they just bought me tickets to the game for my 55th birthday. We went to the Steelers game as a family and they took all my jerseys and spelled my birthday out with the numbers, and I thought that was so sweet.”

The Eagles’ 2018 Super Bowl run was quite the ride for Bergner. As he sat in his chair with his glasses propped up on his head, watching an old video of him and his friends celebrating the Birds’ Super Bowl win, his passion again turned to tears.

Bergner and Eagles fans everywhere are waiting in anticipation for the Eagles’ NFC championship game against the Washington Commanders with hopes to repeat what happened in 2018. If the Eagles can repeat history, he will have more gear to add to his collection — and more videos to post on social media.

“Oh, you got to get the new championship merch,” Bergner said. “And I already have my plan in my head for what jerseys I’m wearing for the rest of the season. I have that week all planned out.”
