Howie Roseman and the Eagles have their initial 53-man roster. Five weeks of training camp and three preseason games culminated with Tuesday afternoon’s 4 p.m. roster deadline. The team made a first wave of cuts Monday and followed with more roster moves Tuesday. Here’s a look at a few surprises from the initial roster ...

Kept: James Bradberry, safety

The Eagles opted to keep corner-turned-safety James Bradberry on their roster … for now. After the deadline, Roseman praised Bradberry’s football IQ and his professionalism — but the Eagles are certainly not done making moves.

Bradberry had an up-and-down camp in his new position. The Eagles don’t have a ton of depth at the position, though they did keep Tristin McCollum (pictured) on the 53-man roster. Teams, including the Eagles, are now going through the process of waivers and figuring out who will be on their 17-player practice squad.

Cut: Dylan McMahon, center

The Eagles haven’t cut a draft pick since 2021, but sixth-round pick Dylan McMahon (N.C. State) was waived Tuesday. Because of that move, plus the releasing of Brett Toth, the Eagles don’t have a real backup center on the 53.

The Eagles would probably love to get McMahon onto the practice squad, but first he has to clear waivers. Roseman mentioned the Eagles have other options on the roster when it comes to backing up Cam Jurgens (pictured), but they did draft McMahon thinking he’d be that player. He still could be if he ends up returning.

IR: Ainias Smith, wide receiver

Ainias Smith didn’t have the best camp after the Eagles selected him in the fifth round, but the diminutive wide receiver was apparently injured and will start the season on injured reserve. Smith started slow and came on late in camp.

Smith did not appear to be injured in the locker room after Saturday’s preseason finale, but going on IR suggests he probably wasn’t 100% during training camp and the Eagles are taking that into consideration when it comes to his roster spot. Smith is likely to miss 4-to-6 weeks and can return when he’s healthy.
