Jalen ‘Two-Shoes’ Hurts returns, Tom Brady confuses Jake Elliott for David Akers, and more from Eagles-Steelers broadcast
The Eagles won the Battle of Pennsylvania was intense, but the broadcast had its share of light moments.
The Eagles picked up another massive win on Sunday over the Pittsburgh Steelers, their 10th in a row with just three games to go. After a week of concern about the passing game, the Birds showed off through the air, with Jalen Hurts throwing for 290 yards and A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith each topping 100 receiving yards and scoring a touchdown.
With Tom Brady and Kevin Burkhardt in the booth, you always know you’re in for a big game, and with a big game comes a lot of big moments on the broadcast. Here are some of the best and worst from the Eagles’ turn as America’s Game of the Week ...
The return of ‘Jalen Two-Shoes’ Hurts
Earlier this year against the Bengals, Jalen Hurts briefly took the field in two different shoes after his cleat malfunctioned, while an injured Dallas Goedert attempted to untie his laces.
“I had a double knot. Usually when I wear a low-top Air Jordan, I have to tie them up real tight so I can have good ankle support. I tied it up so tight I could not take the knot off, so I had to go Jalen two-shoes for a bit,” Hurts told the media after the game.
On Sunday, Hurts brought the look back — this time, on purpose.
Jalen and A.J.
After Brandon Graham’s comments on WIP Monday, Hurts and Brown have been focused on squashing the rumors that the two have a problem with one another.
“BG was just being BG,” Brown said on Wednesday. “He’s emotional. In that case, he just misspoke. Me and Jalen are good. It’s BG. Everybody loves BG. He’s speaking from the heart. He’s just giving his perception on something from the outside.”
Hurts went 8-for-8 with 104 yards passing on the Birds’ third drive of the game, capping it with a touchdown to Brown, and this celebration afterward.

“I guess they’re friends again,” Burkhardt said.
Drama seems like it’s over.
The new Broad Street Bullies
Saquon Barkley has been elite running the ball so far in 2024. But the offensive line has been a huge part of his success. It has helped create some big holes for Barkley’s big gains.
Brady had the perfect comparison.
“Philly’s O-line are a bunch of bullies,” Brady said. “They are the football version of the Broad Street Bullies. They want to punk you.”
Brady has flashbacks
During a good portion of Brady’s NFL career, David Akers kicked for the Eagles. Akers joined the Birds in 1999, and continued on with the Eagles until 2010, making the third-longest field goal in franchise history against the Patriots with a 57-yarder in 2003. Brady also played against Akers in Super Bowl XXXIX. But you’d think, after all these years, he’d have forgotten.
But Jake Elliott has been the Eagles kicker for quite a bit now, including during Super Bowl LII. Brady still confused the two on one of Elliott’s field goal attempts.
Dean Blandino lurks
To open the fourth quarter, Burkhardt and Brady did a quick on-screen intro. Rules analyst Dean Blandino awkwardly stood behind them in the corner of the frame, pretending to do something else.
“By the way, Dean, very stealth in the back,” Burkhardt said. “He’s like the guy in the back of the bar, waiting around, we go to him every once in a while, it’s good to see you.”
Blandino accompanied Brady to Aroma on 3rd in South Philly on Saturday, where he signed autographs for a few local kids.
“The limoncello at the end was pretty good, DB,” Brady said.
Tom Brady reacts to Bill Belichick’s new job
Brady’s former Patriots coach Bill Belichick is taking a new job — in college, with the University of North Carolina.
“Blew me away when I heard the news,” Brady said. “Didn’t think that was an opportunity he was looking at, but he’s a tremendous coach, and being in the locker room with him for as many years, those guys are going to play very hard, and he’s going to coach them well. It’s a great benefit for all of those players who are going to that program. The best coach that the NFL has ever seen, now he’s at the college level.”
Burkhardt, like all of us, is curious about what the Bill Belichick recruiting pitch is going to look like, considering Belichick’s reputation. Brady shared his own story of Belichick being not quite sentimental.
“He’s not the warmest and fuzziest of all time,” Brady said. “I remember one year after we won the Super Bowl, the first year, after we beat the Rams in 2001, he was out on Bourbon Street, we got in the limo after the game the next morning after the press conference, and he goes, ‘You know what, Tom? You had a pretty good season.’ That was about as warm and fuzzy as it got with Coach Belichick.”
