‘Inner Excellence’ spotted on Broad Street as Eagles fans celebrate the NFC championship win

Philly’s celebration of the Eagles’ NFC championship win has a bookish side.
At least a few copies of Inner Excellence have been thrown around — one literally — during Sunday’s revelry. Released in 2020, the book, written by former Chicago Cubs minor league outfielder Jim Murphy, encourages athletes to perform with “a clear mind and unburdened heart,” the author previously told The Inquirer.
Inner Excellence entered the halls of Eagles lore earlier this month after wide receiver A.J. Brown was caught on camera reading a copy of the book during the Eagles-Packers NFC playoff game. The book, Brown told The Inquirer, “gives me a sense of peace.”
”I physically believe I can do anything and everything, but I got to make sure my mental is good,” Brown added of the book’s effects on him.
Birds fans ran with the book’s appearance, taking it all the way to Broad Street following the NFC championship Sunday.
One reveler could be seen holding the book aloft as they marched down the street. Another fan briefly read a passage of the book after a copy was thrown to him as he sat atop a successfully scaled light pole.
Inner Excellence, Brown told The Inquirer, taught him that “if you’re humble, you can’t be embarrassed.”
”No matter what happens in the game or whatever happens, I’m just going to stay free and play free, keep going and take risks,” Brown said.
It was not immediately clear whether the guy who climbed the light pole to take in Inner Excellence’s wisdom had the same takeaway. But if that’s not at least inner peace, we don’t know what is.
