Eagles news: Birds were reportedly close to signing ex-Chiefs defender; ESPN's Schefter expects Philly to shed more salaries
The Eagles have let a bunch of players walk, but have yet to add any new free agents.

NFL free agency officially begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday, though teams have been allowed to negotiate with agents since Monday. Here a full Eagles free agency tracker.
The Eagles surprised everyone by trading safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Texans. The reactions to the trade were across the board, while The Inquirer's beat writers don't quite know what to make of the deal.
Expect the trade market and NFL draft to make up for Eagles’ free-agency wipeout, writes columnist David Murphy.
In other news, the Eagles will visit the White House next month to celebrate their Super Bowl victory.

Latest free agency news: Marcus Mariota, Cooper Kupp, Darrick Forrest
Commanders re-signing Marcus Mariota: The one-time Eagles backup will remain in Washington, D.C. on a one-year, $8 million deal, according to the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Rams to release wide Cooper Kupp: After failing to trade the former Super Bowl MVP, the 31-year-old is expected to garner interest from several teams, including the Green Bay Packers.
Bills add safety Darrick Forrest: The former Commanders defender was drafted in the fifth-round by Washington in 2021 and spent most of last season playing on special teams.

Chargers re-sign ex-Eagles receiver Jalen Reagor
The San Diego Chargers announced Wednesday they've re-signed Jalen Reagor, the former Eagles first-round draft pick who endured a rough two years in Philadelphia.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Reagor began the season on the practice squad and missed time early with a finger injury. All told, Reagor appeared in eight games, recording just seven receptions for 100 yards.
How much salary cap space do the Eagles have?
The Eagles enter the new league year with roughly $24 million in effective salary cap space, according to online database Over the Cap. This number accounts for the future cost of rookie contracts in next month’s NFL draft and the minimum amount needed to fill out a roster.
It does not include the expected releases of Darius Slay and James Bradberry, because the team cut both players with a post June-1 designation and won’t receive the space from those moves until then.
Eagles have eight picks heading into next month's NFL draft
Going into the new league year, the Eagles have eight draft picks, all of which fall somewhere between the first and fifth rounds of next April’s NFL draft.
While each of their first three picks are original to them, four of the eight selections come from other teams due to the high volume of trades Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has brokered in the last few seasons. Here’s a list of the picks they have:
Round 1, Pick 32
Round 2, Pick 64
Round 3, Pick 96
Round 4, Pick 130 (via Detroit)
Round 5, Pick 161 (via Houston)
Round 5, Pick 164 (from Detroit, via Cleveland)
Round 5, Pick 165 (via Washington)
Round 5, Pick 168
NFL free agency moves: Patrick Mahomes, Damar Hamlin and Joey Bosa
It’s been a quiet morning on the free agent front. So far, the Eagles have only added two players via trades — quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and guard Kenyon Green.
Here are the latest free agency moves across the NFL:
Chiefs create cap space: Both Patrick Mahomes and defensive tackle Chris Jones have restructured their contracts, freeing up over $49 million in salary cap space for the Chiefs, according to ESPN’s Field Yates. Kansas City have added a few players in free agency, including offensive tackle Jaylon Moore and cornerback Kristian Fulton.
Safety Damar Hamlin returning to the Bills: The 2021 sixth-round pick, who nearly died of cardiac arrest during a 2023 game, is signing a one-year deal to remain in Buffalo, according to multiple reports.
Bills also land Joey Bosa: The five-time Pro Bowl pass rusher, who was released by the Chargers last week, is signing a one-year, $12.6 million deal with the Bills, according to multiple reports.
Cornerback Mike Ford lands in Atlanta: The former Browns free agent is signing a two-year, $4 million deal with the Falcons, according to ESPN.

Expect trade market, draft to make up for Eagles’ free-agency wipeout
The first two days of free agency were mostly what we expected.
There went the Patriots, with Milton Williams. And the Vikings, with Isaiah Rodgers. And the Cardinals, with Josh Sweat.
Eagles trading for Kenyon Green 'doesn't mean they're out on Mekhi Becton'
The Eagles entered free agency with right guard Mekhi Becton set to hit the open market.
So far, Becton’s name hasn’t been linked to another team. While the Eagles acquired guard Kenyon Green from the Houston Texans in the C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade, it doesn’t mean Becton won’t stay in Philly, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.
ESPN's Adam Schefter expects the Eagles to shed more salaries
Entering day three of free agency, the Eagles have yet to add any new free agents. ESPN’s Adam Schefter doesn’t expect that to change much.
“I think they are more likely to shed more salary than acquire more salary,” Schefter said on 97.5 The Fanatic Wednesday morning. “You’re asking if there’s a trick up their sleeve? No, again, I think they are more likely to shed – shed – more salaries, make more moves the other way, more outgoing than incoming, I think.”
Eagles reportedly 'went down to the wire' on safety Justin Reid

The Eagles have yet to sign any new free agents, but that doesn't mean they aren't trying.
On Tuesday, the New Orleans Saints reportedly landed former Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid with a three-year deal worth $31.5 million. But the Eagles were also trying to sign Reid, and negotiations "went down to the wire," according to NFL reporter James Palmer.
Former Eagles running back Kenneth Gainwell signing with Steelers

At least he'll remain in Pennsylvania.
Kenneth Gainwell, who backed up Saquon Barkley last season, is signing a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to multiple reports.
Mekhi Becton among Eagles' remaining free agents

After two days of unofficial free agency (which technically begins at 4 p.m. today), nine former Eagles players have yet to be signed by other teams.
Among those yet to sign is right guard Mekhi Becton, a former first-round pick for the New York Jets who flourished last season after signing a one-year deal with the Eagles.
Top ten remaining defensive free agents

As NFL free agency moves through its second day, the Eagles have a few holes to fill on defense.
One free agent that could make sense for the Birds is New York Giants edge rusher Azeez Ojulari, a second-round pick in 2021 who attended Georgia with several current Eagles defenders.
Who can replace C.J. Gardner-Johnson at safety for the Eagles?

Add safety to the list of Eagles needs this offseason.
By trading C.J. Gardner-Johnson, the team freed up some short-term cash and created some salary-cap space in the years to come, but will now need to reinforce the defensive secondary as a result.
Eagles 2025 draft picks finalized
The NFL awarded compensatory picks for the 2025 draft, and as expected, the Eagles landed zero.
That won't be the case next year, thanks to high-profile departures by Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, and Isaiah Rodgers. The Eagles are currently projected to land three compensatory picks in the 2026 draft, according to Over the Cap.
