Eagles make some changes at running back in free agency

The Eagles took in the new league year by retooling their running back room.

After Kenneth Gainwell agreed to terms with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the league year turned over Wednesday afternoon, the Eagles agreed to terms with former Green Bay Packers running back AJ Dillon according to a league source.

Dillon, a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft, spent most of last season sidelined with a neck injury but figures to provide the Eagles a physical presence behind Saquon Barkley capable of handling short-yardage situations in particular.

Britain Covey becomes a full free agent, but could still end up with the Eagles

The Eagles elected not to extend a tender offer to wide receiver and return specialist Britain Covey before the start of the new league year according to a league source, making the 27-year-old an unrestricted free agent.

PhillyVoice was first to report the news.

Considering the minimum tender offer would have been $3.2 million, the decision to let Covey enter unrestricted free agency isn’t all that surprising and still leaves open the possibility the former Utah standout could eventually re-sign with the team at a lower number.

Eagles re-sign linebacker and fullback Ben VanSumeren

The Eagles re-signed fullback/linebacker Ben VanSumeren to a one-year deal on Wednesday, according to a league source confirming an NFL Network report.

The 24-year-old linebacker earned a part-time role as a fullback in the Eagles offense last year before suffering a season-ending knee injury that required surgery during a practice in late November. VanSumeren, an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State, has been around the NovaCare Complex rehabbing and figures to factor into the team’s linebacker depth while also offering utility on special teams ace and as a fullback once again next year.

VanSumeren played in 11 games before suffering the injury, logging 22 offensive snaps while also playing 75% of the team’s special teams snaps.

Mekhi Becton among Eagles' remaining free agents

Nearly three days into NFL free agency, nine former Eagles players have yet to be signed by other teams.

Among those yet to sign is right guard Mekhi Becton, a former first-round pick for the New York Jets who flourished last season after signing a one-year deal with the Eagles.

The Birds did acquire guard Kenyon Green from the Houston Texans in the C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade, but the Eagles could still end up re-signing Becton.

Chargers re-sign ex-Eagles receiver Jalen Reagor

The San Diego Chargers announced Wednesday they've re-signed Jalen Reagor, the former Eagles first-round draft pick who endured a rough two years in Philadelphia.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Reagor began the season on the practice squad and missed time early with a finger injury. All told, Reagor appeared in eight games, recording just seven receptions for 100 yards.

Prior to landing in Los Angeles, Reagor spent two seasons with the New England Patriots. The Eagles traded him to the Minnesota Vikings leading up to the 2022 season, where he lasted a year before being waived.

How much salary cap space do the Eagles have?

The Eagles enter the new league year with roughly $24 million in effective salary cap space, according to online database Over the Cap. This number accounts for the future cost of rookie contracts in next month’s NFL draft and the minimum amount needed to fill out a roster.

It does not include the expected releases of Darius Slay and James Bradberry, because the team cut both players with a post June-1 designation and won’t receive the space from those moves until then.

The team’s effective salary cap, which accounts for unused cap space from the previous year and incentives paid out to players from last season as well, is $293 million.

Eagles have eight picks heading into next month's NFL draft

Going into the new league year, the Eagles have eight draft picks, all of which fall somewhere between the first and fifth rounds of next April’s NFL draft.

While each of their first three picks are original to them, four of the eight selections come from other teams due to the high volume of trades Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has brokered in the last few seasons. Here’s a list of the picks they have:

  1. Round 1, Pick 32

  2. Round 2, Pick 64

  3. Round 3, Pick 96

  4. Round 4, Pick 130 (via Detroit)

  5. Round 5, Pick 161 (via Houston)

  6. Round 5, Pick 164 (from Detroit, via Cleveland)

  7. Round 5, Pick 165 (via Washington)

  8. Round 5, Pick 168

The fifth-rounder from Houston and the one from the Lions came earlier this week, the former coming from the Texans in return for C.J. Gardner-Johnson and the latter coming from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for Kenny Pickett.

NFL free agency moves: Patrick Mahomes, Damar Hamlin and Joey Bosa

It’s been a quiet morning on the free agent front. So far, the Eagles have only added two players via trades — quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and guard Kenyon Green.

Here are the latest free agency moves across the NFL:

  1. Chiefs create cap space: Both Patrick Mahomes and defensive tackle Chris Jones have restructured their contracts, freeing up over $49 million in salary cap space for the Chiefs, according to ESPN’s Field Yates. Kansas City have added a few players in free agency, including offensive tackle Jaylon Moore and cornerback Kristian Fulton.

  2. Safety Damar Hamlin returning to the Bills: The 2021 sixth-round pick, who nearly died of cardiac arrest during a 2023 game, is signing a one-year deal to remain in Buffalo, according to multiple reports.

  3. Bills also land Joey Bosa: The five-time Pro Bowl pass rusher, who was released by the Chargers last week, is signing a one-year, $12.6 million deal with the Bills, according to multiple reports.

  4. Cornerback Mike Ford lands in Atlanta: The former Browns free agent is signing a two-year, $4 million deal with the Falcons, according to ESPN.

Expect trade market, draft to make up for Eagles’ free-agency wipeout

The first two days of free agency were mostly what we expected.

There went the Patriots, with Milton Williams. And the Vikings, with Isaiah Rodgers. And the Cardinals, with Josh Sweat.

The good news for Eagles fans is that Roseman has been here before. The result was a Super Bowl.

Eagles trading for Kenyon Green 'doesn't mean they're out on Mekhi Becton'

The Eagles entered free agency with right guard Mekhi Becton set to hit the open market.

So far, Becton’s name hasn’t been linked to another team. While the Eagles acquired guard Kenyon Green from the Houston Texans in the C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade, it doesn’t mean Becton won’t stay in Philly, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.

“Doesn’t mean they’re out on Mekhi Becton, but at least some offensive line help and depth,” Rapoport said Wednesday morning on Good Morning, Football.

ESPN's Adam Schefter expects the Eagles to shed more salaries

Entering day three of free agency, the Eagles have yet to add any new free agents. ESPN’s Adam Schefter doesn’t expect that to change much.

“I think they are more likely to shed more salary than acquire more salary,” Schefter said on 97.5 The Fanatic Wednesday morning. “You’re asking if there’s a trick up their sleeve? No, again, I think they are more likely to shed – shed – more salaries, make more moves the other way, more outgoing than incoming, I think.”

Schefter said the Eagles wanted to re-sign cornerback Isaiah Rodgers, but weren’t willing to give him the two-year, $15 million contract he landed with the Minnesota Vikings.

Eagles reportedly 'went down to the wire' on safety Justin Reid

The Eagles have yet to sign any new free agents, but that doesn't mean they aren't trying.

On Tuesday, the New Orleans Saints reportedly landed former Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid with a three-year deal worth $31.5 million. But the Eagles were also trying to sign Reid, and negotiations "went down to the wire," according to NFL reporter James Palmer.

The Eagles are on the market for a safety after trading C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans on Tuesday in a surprise move. In exchange, the Eagles received guard Kenyon Green, who doesn't help the Birds much on defense.

At least he'll remain in Pennsylvania.

Kenneth Gainwell, who backed up Saquon Barkley last season, is signing a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to multiple reports.

The 25-year-old running back has been a solid backup after being drafted by the Eagles in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL draft. But the Eagles appear ready to elevate 2024 draft pick Will Shipley into the role of Barkley's primary backup, who "flashed as a runner and a receiver on the few occasions he got an opportunity" last season, according to The Inquirer's Jeff McLane.

As NFL free agency moves through its second day, the Eagles have a few holes to fill on defense.

One free agent who could make sense for the Birds is New York Giants edge rusher Azeez Ojulari, a second-round pick in 2021 who attended Georgia with several current Eagles defenders.

Here's what The Inquirer's EJ Smith wrote about Ojulari last week:

Add safety to the list of Eagles needs this offseason.

By trading C.J. Gardner-Johnson, the team freed up some short-term cash and created some salary-cap space in the years to come, but will now need to reinforce the defensive secondary as a result.

Here are some options, one internal, one in free agency, and one through the draft, who could replace Gardner-Johnson in the Eagles’ safety room:

Eagles 2025 draft picks finalized

The NFL awarded compensatory picks for the 2025 draft, and as expected, the Eagles landed zero.

That won't be the case next year, thanks to high-profile departures by Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, and Isaiah Rodgers. The Eagles are currently projected to land three compensatory picks in the 2026 draft, according to Over the Cap.

As for 2025, the Eagles currently have eight picks and won't be drafting until late in the first round... if Howie Rosemen decides to keep the pick. Here's the Birds' current draft order:

  1. 1. Round 1, Pick 32

  2. 2. Round 2, Pick 64

  3. 3. Round 3, Pick 96

  4. 4. Round 4, Pick 134

  5. 5. Round 5, Pick 161 (from Hou)

  6. 6. Round 5, Pick 164 (from Det via Cle)

  7. 7. Round 5, Pick 165 (from Wash)
