Eagles linebacker Nolan Smith Jr. was charged with speeding and reckless driving after a May 15 arrest in Twiggs County, Ga., according to a police report obtained by The Inquirer. Smith’s arrest was first reported Wednesday by ESPN and The Georgia Gazette.

Smith was clocked traveling 135 mph in a 70 mph zone at 10:41 p.m., a representative of the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office told ESPN. He was processed and posted bond, per the report. A court date has been set for July 14 but Smith would not need to appear if he pays the associated fines, the sheriff’s office told ESPN.

Smith, selected with the No. 30 pick in the 2023 draft, was previously cited while a student at the University of Georgia on misdemeanor charges of driving on a suspended license and speeding in a construction zone on Jan. 19, 2022. The Athens Herald-Banner reported in July 2022 that Smith was accepted into a pretrial diversion program as part of a plea negotiation in the matter.

The Eagles are set to begin Organized Team Activities (OTAs) on May 26 at the Jefferson Health Training Complex.

Smith has played in 45 games with 22 starts over his first three seasons with the Eagles, and recorded a career-high 6.5 sacks during the team’s Super Bowl season of 2024. He was hampered by injuries last season, aggravating a triceps injury that limited him to 12 games.

The Eagles picked up Smith’s 2027 fifth-year contract option on April 27.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
