The 2025 Golden Globe nominations, announced on Monday, spotlighted a handful of Philadelphia-raised stars and locally set projects. Beloved Philly school comedy Abbott Elementary received two nods and The Brutalist, the epic film following an immigrant architect building a community center in Doylestown, earned seven nominations, including best motion picture for a drama.

West Philly-raised actors Quinta Brunson and Colman Domingo both received nominations for their acting. Abbott star Brunson is nominated for best performance by a female actor in a television series (musical or comedy) for playing the endearing try-hard protagonist Janine Teagues. Brunson was also nominated in that category last year, though she lost to The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri (who has been nominated again for 2025). Brunson took home the Golden Globe for her Abbott performance in 2023, when the show won best television series (musical or comedy) and earned multiple nominations. This year, Abbott is again a nominee for best television series, as is The Bear.

Domingo, who was nominated for a Golden Globe last year recognizing his performance in Rustin, earned a nod for best performance by a male actor in a motion picture (drama) for his heart-wrenching role in Sing Sing. It’s the only nomination for the film, which follows a transformative acting program for incarcerated men at New York’s Sing Sing prison. He’ll be competing with Adrien Brody, who was also nominated for his magnetic performance in The Brutalist.

In addition to Brody’s recognition, The Brutalist is in the running for best director for a motion picture, recognizing Brady Corbet; best screenplay for a motion picture, which Corbet earned with his co-screenwriter and partner Mona Fastvold; and best original score for Daniel Blumberg’s soaring, monumental music. In the acting categories, Felicity Jones, who plays the fierce wife of Brody’s character, received a nod for best performance by a female actor in a supporting role in any motion picture while Guy Pearce was also named a nominee for best performance by an actor in a supporting role in any motion picture, highlighting his role as a domineering Philadelphia businessman.

Corbet’s film ranks second in the highest number of Golden Globe film nominations, following the musical Emilia Pérez, which earned 10 nods with a cast including Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Karla Sofía Gascón. Other films in the spotlight include Conclave with six nominations, Anora, A Real Pain, Wicked, Nickel Boys, and A Complete Unknown (the Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet that was partially filmed in South Jersey).
