Philly, On Location

Rocky is the most iconic Philly movie of all time. So famous that there are perhaps more people commemorating the famous climb outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art than inside the museum seeing some world-class art.

After a nationwide search for the perfect department store, the producers of Mannequin decided on John Wanamaker's (now Macy's Center City) to double up as Prince and Co.

The moral of the story is, it can still be a date if you order Raisin Bran or a cup of tea. As Pat and Tiffany will have us know from their Llanerch Diner outing in Silver Linings Playbook.

Adam Sandler stars as a coach for the Sixers in Hustle, directed by Jeremiah Zagar. In this scene, Tierra Whack practices her game in the park opposite Geno’s Steaks. That way, she can grab a quick post-practice snack on her way out. Smart.

Only a small part of National Treasure was filmed in Philadelphia. The scene at Independence Hall was shot on a California farm, but this scene filmed at the Old Pine Street Presbyterian Church is 100% real.

The crumbling South Street Bridge was torn down and built anew in 2010. So this bridge, in its Twelve Monkeys form, doesn’t even exist anymore.

This may seem to be a long run, but this scene with Jordan running with kids on dirt bikes in Creed is actually only a few blocks in Kensington and Port Richmond.

Filmmaker Ricky Staub saw a man riding a horse down a Philadelphia street, which led him to the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club. The result was Concrete Cowboy, filmed largely in North Philly. This scene was filmed in Strawberry Mansion.

65 years after The Blob, the Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville is still showing movies and to our knowledge haven’t suffered any further blob-related incidents, except some very enthusiastic reenactments of this gruesome scene.
