‘Superman’ has dropped a new trailer featuring Philly’s very own David Corenswet
The Philadelphia native breaks the sound barrier in James Gunn's film. And yes, he is a Birds fan.
What’s that up in the sky? Mystery drones? The Italian Air Force? No, it’s Philadelphia’s Superman.
On Thursday, DC Comics and Warner Brothers released the official teaser trailer for the upcoming Superman movie, hitting theaters July 11, starring Philadelphia’s very own David Corenswet.
Corenswet, 31, was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Center City. He got his start as a child actor in the region’s top theaters, from the Arden and Walnut Street theaters to the Philadelphia Shakespeare Festival. The Bryn Mawr’s Shipley School alum attended University of Pennsylvania briefly before transferring and completing his drama degree at Juilliard.
Corenswet, reportedly, also a Philadelphia Eagles fan, per Fox29’s Devan Kaney X post. “He is, in fact, from the area and a Philly sports fan. Go Birds,” he posted after photos of Corenswet donning an Eagles sweater went viral.
The new Superman film, written and directed by James Gunn, will mark the beginning of a rebooted “DC Universe,” (DCU) after DC films failed to meet critical and commercial success in the past few years — a sharp contrast to Marvel Cinematic Universe’s 34-film, multi-billion-dollar enterprise, which kick-started in 2008 with Iron Man.
The opening scene of the teaser trailer finds a beat-up and bloodied Superman crash landing into barren snow-covered ground. Through wheezes, he’s able to muster enough energy to whistle, the sound piercing through the air for miles. Soon a freight train of snow comes barreling toward him to reveal Krypto the superdog, who comes to rescue Superman and bring him “home.”
This is the first time in the modern era of live-action superhero films that Superman’s pet will be on screen.
Throughout the trailer, vignettes reveal what’s to come, while an electric guitar rendition of John William’s original theme from 1978’s Superman: The Movie plays in the background. A few reveals include a scene of Clark Kent hugging his father on the steps of their Smallville, Kansas farm, and one of him sharing glances with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), his coworker at the Metropolis newspaper, The Daily Planet.
Not to mention the army of DC superheroes like the Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Metamorpho, and actor Nicholas Hoult playing the infamous bald billionaire Lex Luthor.
In an interview with Variety, Gunn said this Superman isn’t afraid to be true to the comics’ fantastical elements.
“We’re embracing all of the Superman mythology,” he said. “He has friends who are other superheroes. He has people he doesn’t get along as well with who are other superheroes. He has a lot of the things that we love from the Superman comics that we haven’t been able to see as much of in filmed media, and definitely haven’t been able to see in a grounded way, which is what I hope we’ve created.”
Superman is Corenswet’s first major role after years of racking up a career boasting credits in blockbuster films like Twister, Ryan Murphy and Netflix’s The Politician and Hollywood, and costarring in the second installment of A24’s horror X trilogy.
