Jon Bon Jovi joins the Eagles on a Christmas song
Chuck Berry's 'Run Rudolph Run' get the Eagles Christmas album treatment, all thanks to Kelce, Mailata, and Jordan. And Jon Bon Jovi.
Jon Bon Jovi, meet the Philly Specials.
The third Eagles Christmas album with singing linemen Jason Kelce, Jordan Mailata, and Lane Johnson came out on Nov. 22 and is already a runaway success, topping the Billboard independent albums chart and on schedule to raise enough money to present holiday gifts to every student and teacher in Philadelphia public and charter schools.
But as it turns out, the Philly Specials have one more song up their greensleeves. On Friday, a cover of Chuck Berry’s “Run Rudolph Run,” will be released with special guest Jon Bon Jovi singing along with Kelce, Mailata, and Johnson. Berry’s 1958 song is also frequently heard in a cover version by Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones.

Bon Jovi joins Stevie Nicks as a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, not from Philadelphia, who has nonetheless joined in on the Philly Specials benefit project. Among Philadelphians, the project has attracted stars like Patti LaBelle, Boyz II Men, and folk-rock band Mt. Joy on “Santa Drives An Astrovan,” the single which has topped the iTunes holiday chart. As has “Maybe This Christmas,” Kelce duet on a Ron Sexsmith song with Stevie Nicks, which managed to knock off Mariah Carey from the top.
Philly Specials producer Charlie Hall said “Run Rudolph Run” was recorded in the summer before the Eagles season began.
“It was such a special moment, and in a sense captures the spirit of the entire affair as well as anything we’ve ever done. I especially love how Lane taps into a whole new zone with his vocal. There was a feeling in the room that I’ll never forget when we cut this one. Everyone just laid it all out there. I wanted it to cook and I wanted it to be greasy,” Hall said via email.
Bassist Anthony Tidd and drummer Justin Faulkner, “really found the sweet spot. It swings, it’s loose as hell, and it rocks. By the last few instrumental verses, Justin was just flowing so hard, arms flailing, the room was sweaty and electric.”
Bon Jovi’s vocal and a solo by his guitarist Phil X were added later, Hall said, adding that “Jon is Jordy’s all time hero, so to have a track with Jordan, Lane, Kelce, and Jon all singing together was just the best way to wrap this year up in a bow.”
Earlier this week, Kelce, Mailata, and Johnson were joined by Gov. Josh Shapiro and Philadelphia school superintendent Tony B. Watlington Sr. on a motorcade that went to three schools in Philadelphia handing out gifts in a program called Operation Snowball. In total, 1.1 million gifts are being distributed.
The A Philly Special Christmas Party album, which does not include the Bon Jovi song, also benefits the Children’s Crisis Treatment Center and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, along with other local charities.
