‘Avatar: The Way of Water’

Thirteen years after his original global smash, James Cameron has finally finished the 192-minute sequel, with new first-time technical wizardry. Sam Worthington returns as the voice of Jake Sully and Zoe Saldana is back as Neytiri. The plot involves a threat to the Na’vi and the Sullys fight for safety. With Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet. (Rated PG-13. Premieres Friday, Dec. 16, in theaters.)

‘Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams’

A documentary that touches the heart and sole of shoe giant Salvatore Ferragamo. Narrated by Michael Stuhlbarg. With Manolo Blahnik, Grace Coddington, Christian Louboutin, and Martin Scorsese. Directed by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name). (Rated PG. Premieres Friday, Dec. 16, in theaters.)

‘Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths’

In this season of filmmakers looking inward (James Gray with Armageddon Time, Steven Spielberg with The Fabelmans) comes this comedy-drama from Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker Alexander Gonzalez Iñarritu (The Revenant). Here, a famed documentarian returns home to Mexico to learn about his past and himself. Starring Daniel Giménez Cacho. In Spanish with English subtitles. (Rated R. Premieres Friday, Dec. 16, on Netflix.)
