New films this week include a story on the Agojie warriors and two very different movies featuring twins
Viola Davis stars in "The Woman King." "The Silent Twins" is about Welsh identical twins. "Goodnight Mommy" features Naomi Watts as a mother recovering from surgery.
‘The Woman King’
An action film based on the true story of the all-female Agojie warriors, who fought for the West African nation of Dahomey (now Benin) in the 1800s. Viola Davis stars as General Nanisca and is also a producer. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. A cowriter and coproducer is Norristown’s Maria Bello. The film was a big hit at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. (Rated PG-13. Premieres Friday, Sept. 16 in theaters.)
‘The Silent Twins’
A family drama based on a true story about Welsh identical twins June and Jennifer Gibbons, members of the only Black family in town, who would communicate only with each other and become catatonic when apart. An unfortunate trip to a psychiatric hospital tests their bond. Starring Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrence as the twins. Directed by Agnieszka Smoczynska. (Rated R. Premieres Friday, Sept. 16 in theaters.)
‘Goodnight Mommy’
Another movie with twins, this one based on a creepy 2014 Austrian thriller. Naomi Watts stars as a bandaged mother recovering from surgery on her face, whose look and behavior freaks out her twin boys (Nicholas and Cameron Crovetti). Directed by Matt Sobel. (Rated R. Premieres Friday, Sept. 16 on Prime Video.)
