More fans will be allowed into Flyers, 76ers home games next month if city follows state’s plan

Flyers and 76ers home games may have about 5,000 fans in early April.

Fans sit in their seats before the Flyers and Washington Capitals game on March 7. The Flyers and Sixers allow 3,100 fans to attend games at the Wells Fargo Center, and that number is expected to increase on April 4.

More fans are expected to be allowed to attend Flyers and 76ers games early next month.

Gov. Tom Wolf loosened indoor coronavirus restrictions Monday, increasing indoor capacity from 15% to 25%, effective April 4. If the city of Philadelphia agrees with that change, games at the Wells Fargo Center could increase from 3,100 to about 5,000 per game, though the latter number has not been determined.

The city is expected to follow the state’s ruling.

Fans must still be at least six feet apart, wear masks, and continue taking other health measures.

If the city agrees with the state’s new restrictions, it would first affect the Sixers for their April 4 home game against Memphis, and the Flyers for their April 6 matchup against Boston at the Wells Fargo Center.

“Over the past week, the health and safety measures we’ve put in place at Wells Fargo Center have been a huge success, and we’ve been able to safely welcome thousands of fans back to the arena for Flyers and 76ers games,” said Valerie Camillo, president of business operations for the Flyers and the Wells Fargo Center, in a statement. “We’re encouraged by the Governor’s announcement today, and we will continue working with state and city officials and public health experts to safely increase our capacity in the weeks and months ahead.”

Camillo said safety “will always be our first priority, but we’re excited to move toward welcoming even more fans back to Broad Street.”

Even if the city increases capacity limits to 25%, a source said, Wells Fargo Center officials still need to take into consideration health and safety protocols. For example: keeping seating pods socially distanced is a limiting factor for how many seats can be made available

With all the factors at play, the Flyers and Sixers will announce capacity increases if/when the city approves the state’s measure.
