Jamie Drysdale and the Flyers ‘welcome’ Cutter Gauthier to Philly with a 6-0 statement win

In a game Flyers fans have had circled since the summer, the Flyers and their fans showed Gauthier there's a price to pay for disrespecting Philadelphia.

The Flyers stuck to the script.

In front of a raucous crowd, the Flyers dominated the visiting Anaheim Ducks from the opening faceoff to the final buzzer, winning 6-0 and snapping a four-game losing streak.

And it was a script Hollywood couldn’t have written any better.

With Cutter Gauthier at the Wells Fargo Center for the first time since he was traded 369 days ago, the Flyers and their fans let everyone know they don’t take kindly to someone saying they don’t want to wear the orange and black or be in Philly.

Every time the Flyers had a chance to say hello to the Flyers’ 2022 first-round draft pick they did. Through the first two periods, Gauthier was hit three times, twice via booming body blows from Rasmus Ristolainen.

And they got into his face whenever they could with Travis Konecny appearing to tell Gauthier, “I will fight you. I promise I will [expletive] fight you.”

“The crowd’s doing it all,” Konecny told NBCSP during the second intermission. “It’s been a lot of fun playing tonight. I don’t know the kid. We’re just giving him a hard time. I think when you come and be a Flyer, you don’t really understand till you’re here, and it means a lot. So I mean his loss, and I mean it’s on to the next one. We don’t really care.”

For the first time in a long time, the crowd was into it from warmups to the announcement of the three stars, giving it to Gauthier the entire time. In between the boos when he was on the ice, the “We Want Cutter” chants when he wasn’t, the “Cut-ter” serenading, and every pleasantry you can think of using his name — most not clean for print — Flyers fans also had plenty to cheer for.

Finally.

In the last game on Thursday, the Flyers were booed from the 10-minute mark on in a 4-1 loss to the Dallas Stars in which they were dominated from start to finish. They were not going to let that happen again.

Morgan Frost opened the scoring 6 minutes, 48 seconds (ironically) into the game when a Konecny shot deflected off his skate and past Ducks goaltender John Gibson.

The building was buzzing and it almost burst at the seams in the last two minutes of the opening frame when Jamie Drysdale — yes, that Jamie Drysdale who was acquired from the Ducks for Gauthier — took a leading pass from Konency and scored past Gibson for a power-play goal.

“It’s really awesome to hear it get that loud and the support, I think we’re thriving in this atmosphere. Most supportive fans in the league,” Drysdale told NBCSP during the first intermission. The support included the fans chanting, “Jamie’s better.”

The goals didn’t stop coming nor did the fisticuffs. Although there wasn’t an actual fight, 13 combined roughing minors were doled out by the referees. And there were plenty of scrums and rabbit punches — and some regular punches too — thrown around between two teams who won’t see each other again until next season.

Owen Tippett extended the score to 3-0 late in the second period when he buried a Konecny pass with a one-timer from one knee down on a late-developing two-on-one. In the opening minute of the third period, Ryan Poehling used his speed to blow past former Flyers defenseman Radko Gudas and chip one over Gibson short-side as he glided through the crease.

And the fun didn’t stop.

On another power play, Matvei Michkov corralled a Konecny shot attempt off the end boards and buried it for his first goal in 2025 and second in his past 16 games. If you weren’t sure how much it meant to him, just watch the reaction.

Less than two minutes later Garnet Hathaway made it a six-pack of goals when he drove to the net and buried the rebound of a Poehling shot while falling.
