Johnny Gaudreau sets U.S. scoring mark as U.S. routs Kazakhstan, 10-1
The South Jersey native notched a goal and four assists at the hockey world championship. Gaudreau surpassed Patrick Kane's record for points.
PRAGUE — Johnny Gaudreau had a goal and four assists, setting a U.S. record, as the United States routed Kazakhstan, 10-1, at the ice hockey world championship on Sunday.
Captain Brady Tkachuk scored three power play goals and added an assist for the Americans.
A South Jersey native, Gaudreau set the U.S. scoring record with his 43rd point, one more than Patrick Kane.
“It’s cool. I just found out right after the game,” Gaudreau said. “It’s really special. I’m very honored to be able to play for the USA. Any time I get a chance to come over here, it’s a true honor. I owe a lot of thanks to my teammates.”
Its fourth victory lifted the U.S. to second place in Group B with 13 points, one ahead of Germany with a game against Latvia on Tuesday to play in the preliminary round.
Matt Boldy scored twice and had four assists, Brock Nelson and Luke Kunin both had a goal and an assist, and Gavin Brindley and Kevin Hayes also scored. Alex Nedeljkovic made 13 saves.
In Group A, Austria beat Norway, 4-1, and is tied for fourth place with Finland. The top four from each group advance to the playoff round.
Later on Sunday, Canada plays Switzerland in a clash for the lead in Group A between two teams that already qualified for the playoffs while Slovakia faces Latvia in Group B.
