Flyers’ Joel Farabee placed on COVID-19 list, will not play tonight against Penguins

The move comes just as the Penguins removed Sidney Crosby from the list.

Joel Farabee, who is tied for the team lead with 10 goals this season, has been placed on the COVID-19 protocol list and will not play tonight.

Joel Farabee’s red-hot start has been paused after the Flyers placed him on the COVID-19 protocol list just prior to Thursday night’s game against the Penguins.

Coach Alain Vigneault said after the team’s morning skate that he hadn’t settled on a lineup because he had a “lot of moving parts.” This obviously was the biggest.

Farabee’s placement on the list coincided with the Penguins removing Sidney Crosby off. Crosby missed Tuesday’s game, but is expected to play tonight.

Farabee, in his second season, was skating on the right side of Sean Couturier and James van Riemsdyk. It’s been the team’s most productive line lately. His 10 goals, including two in Tuesday’s loss to the Pens, already were more than the eight he had last season.

Players can be placed on the list for any number of reasons, ranging from contracting the disease to precautionary contact tracing.

Penguins assistant coach Todd Reirden also was removed from the COVID-19 list and was cleared to return to the bench.

The Flyers and Penguins are tied for fourth place in the East Division, with the Flyers holding two games in hand over the Penguins. Thursday is the second of a unique three-game series in Pittsburgh which concludes Saturday afternoon.
