Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is opening 2 stores in Philadelphia, and we know where they’ll be
The scoop shops, now in expansion mode, have locations confirmed in Rittenhouse and Fishtown.
Here’s some scoop: Philly’s premium ice cream scene will be heating up with the late-2021 arrival of two Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams stores to Rittenhouse and Fishtown.
A company spokesperson did not share the scoop-shop locations, but my real estate sources pin them at 1901 Chestnut St. (formerly a Snap Kitchen) and at 1322 Frankford Ave., pretty much across from La Colombe’s flagship store.
Jeni Britton Bauer of Columbus, Ohio, founded the company in 2002 after having read Business Plans for Dummies, and her 50-plus stores are national while pints are sold at Whole Foods, Acme, Wegmans, and Moms. Bauer has written two books on ice cream-making. The first, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home, won a James Beard Award in 2012.
Jeni’s, a Certified B Corporation, was recognized in 2019 as a Best for the World honoree, scoring in the top 10% of all B Corporations worldwide for community impact. Jeni’s partners with growers, makers, and producers that supply them with ingredients in an arrangement called the Fellowship Model.
Also on the ice cream beat: The city’s first location of Van Leeuwen Ice Cream — a darling of the vegan set, in particular — is targeting a July opening at 13th and Sansom Streets, a company rep said.
