Avery Lewis of Friends’ Central sets state record in long jump at New Balance Nationals
Lewis made a statement with a new record on the final day of competition at Franklin Field.
Avery Lewis set a personal record in the long jump that was also a new girls’ state outdoor record to claim victory at the New Balance Nationals competition set at Franklin Field on Sunday.
The record was necessary to win, as second-place finisher Juliette Laracuente-Huebner helped push Lewis to the feat, notching a jump of 20 feet, 3.5 inches. Lewis’ winning jump of 20-9.75 broke the old record set by Villa Maria’s Angie Brown in 1994 of 20-9, according to MileSplit.
Lewis had a previous personal outdoor best of 20-8.5 inches. She was also the winner in the New Balance Nationals Indoor competition in March in Boston, with a winning jump of 20-5.
