Isaiah Wong wins his second MVP in a week at the Iverson Roundball Classic
The 6-foot-2 guard scored a game-high 38 points as his Team Honor defeated Team Loyalty, 159-155.
Isaiah Wong wasn’t slated to play in the 3rd annual Iverson Roundball Classic four days ago.
But when the Bonner-Prendergast senior scored 50 points in the Play-by-Play Classic on Monday, he was named that game’s MVP, earning himself an automatic spot in Friday’s Iverson Classic.
This time, before a packed house at Souderton High School, the two-time Catholic League MVP put on another show, this one against some of the top recruits in the country. The 6-foot-3 guard scored a game-high 38 points as his Team Honor defeated Team Loyalty, 159-155, and he was named MVP again.
Khalil Whitney, a senior guard at Roselle Catholic and a Kentucky recruit, also had 38 points.
Wong gave the crowd its first roar of the night when he crossed over a defender and drilled a step-back jumper while getting fouled. But that was just the beginning of his storied night.
At times, one side of the court cleared out to allow Wong to go one-on-one against his defender.
“I love Isaiah Wong,” said former NBA All-Star Baron Davis, who coached Team Honor. “I love his demeanor. He never really shows emotion, and that’s what I like because he has a killer’s mentality.”
Wong sat next to Davis on the bench whenever he got subbed out, and the two talked often.
“He’s a coachable kid,” Davis said. “You can say something to him and he’ll say ‘Coach, I got you.’ ”
Wong, in all the excitement of the night, could not be located for comment after the game.
Davis had one piece of advice for the Miami recruit.
“Be yourself,” Davis said. “Trust yourself. Trust your talent, and I think that’s the most important thing for somebody like that. Stay the course, and be patient with your talent.”
Abington senior forward Eric Dixon played for Team Loyalty as the only other local representative. Dixon is a Villanova recruit.
Josh Pierre-Lewis, a Roselle Catholic senior and a Temple recruit, was also on Team Loyalty, which was coached by former NBA champion Stephen Jackson. One of Jackson’s assistants was another former NBA champion and current Cleveland Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith.
Iverson made an appearance in the gym toward the end of the first quarter. The game was stopped to introduce the Hall of Famer to the crowd.
