National signing day: Former Imhotep standout Isheem Young commits to Iowa State

Isheem Young, a former Imhotep Charter standout and one-time Penn State recruit, has committed to play at Iowa State next year.

The safety was deciding between the Cyclones and West Virginia.

Matt Caponi, the Mountaineers' defensive-backs coach, took a job with Iowa State last month, according to the Des Moines Register, and helped recruit Young.

Young had committed to play for Penn State, but his scholarship offer was withdrawn after he was arrested in December for robbing a South Philadelphia Wawa during the summer.

In May 2018, Young agreed to admit to counts of robbery, conspiracy and possession of an instrument of crime, and a judge remanded his case to juvenile court. Because of the legal trouble, Young reclassified to the class of 2019.

Before his arrest, Young was being recruited by a number of top programs. He had offers from Alabama, Michigan, LSU, Clemson, Georgia, Oklahoma, and Florida State, among others. In 2017, he was ranked as the No. 6 recruit in Pennsylvania.

Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell said in a statement Wednesday that he’s excited to welcome Young to Ames.

“He is a highly motivated young man who has expressed tremendous gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of the Iowa State football program,” Campbell said. “We are all confident in Isheem’s ability to join this team, university and community and make a positive impact on those around him in all he does.”

Campbell is entering his fourth season as head coach and has led the Cyclones to a 19-19 record overall, winning Big 12 coach of the year twice.
