A bicyclist was fatally struck by a vehicle on Broad Street in North Philadelphia
The cyclist, identified as Michael Buie, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
A bicyclist died after a vehicle driver struck him in North Philadelphia early Monday, police said.
Police responded to the crash on the 3700 block of North Broad Street just before 2 a.m., where they said the driver of a black Nissan traveling south struck a cyclist who was crossing from the west side of Broad Street to the east side against a red light. The driver of the Nissan remained at the scene and called 911, police said.
The cyclist, identified as Michael Buie, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
An investigation is ongoing, police said, and is being handled by the department’s Crash Investigation Division.
Last year, 123 fatal crashes involving vehicles took place in Philly as of Dec. 27, police said, which included 55 pedestrian deaths. According to the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, at least three cyclists were killed in vehicular crashes in 2024.
Buie is believed to be the first cyclist killed in Philly in 2025, according to the bicycle coalition.
“It’s especially heavy that as we are still analyzing 2024 fatal crash data, another family is dealing with the tragedy of losing a loved one to traffic violence,” the bicycle coalition said in a statement posted to its website, emphasizing that Broad Street has become “the most dangerous road in Philadelphia.”
According to the city’s annual Vision Zero report released last month, Broad Street experienced more than one traffic death per month in 2024 — greater than any other city street.
