Dancing with the Stars returns to ABC next month for its 28th season, and it’s bringing a Philly-area native along for a twirl.
Ardmore native Kate Flannery will appear on the show’s upcoming season as one of of the 12 celebrity contestants, Good Morning America announced today.
Best known as Meredith Palmer on The Office, Flannery is a graduate of Archbishop John Carroll High School in Radnor, as well as University of the Arts, from which she earned a BFA in acting in 1987. Her family formerly owned and operated Center City Bar T.A. Flannery’s — fitting, considering Meredith was The Office’s resident drunk — until it closed in 2011 and was replaced by Rogues Gallery Bar.
While The Office ended up being a massive hit, Flannery actually kept working normal jobs, including one as a waitress, until the show was picked up for a second season in 2005.
“The ratings were not good that first season at all,” Flannery told the Inquirer in 2013. “I think we were only supposed to do 13 episodes initially and they kept adding a few more. So, yeah, even quitting my restaurant job was a risk at the time."
Flannery responded to the announcement of her inclusion on next season of Dancing with the Stars with a tweet, writing “You’re not drunk!”
Other celebrity contestants for the new season include Queer Eye host Karamo Brown, who has recently been spotted filming for season five of the show around Philly, former Nickelodeon star Kel Mitchell, model Christie Brinkley, and, controversially, ex-White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer. Spicer’s involvement, according to Brown, was not announced to the other contestants before the information was made public.
Season 28 of Dancing with the Stars premieres Sept. 16 on ABC.
