‘I’m sorry’: Empire State Building was lit up in green and white for the Eagles’ NFC championship win

The Empire State Building previously dazzled with Eagles colors following the team’s 2023 NFC championship victory — and it was controversial.

Well, at least they apologized this time.

Once again, the Empire State Building lit up green and white following the Eagles’ NFC championship victory. The New York City landmark shared its change on social media with a simple message.

“I’m sorry I have to do this,” the account said, sharing alongside its apology a video of the building lit up for the Birds’ win.

The Empire State Building previously dazzled with Eagles colors following the team’s 2023 NFC championship victory — and it was controversial.

That year, New York’s Sanitation Department called the move “treacherous, traitorous, and unforgiveable.” New York City Councilmember Keith Powers, meanwhile, said it was “absolutely ridiculous.” And Barstool Sports founder Dave Portney decried the display as “lame,” calling for the the building to be knocked down.

But every year since at least 2016, the Empire State Building has lit up in the colors of the winning teams of both the NFC and AFC championships. It also lit up green and white in 2018 — and, yes, that caused outrage among New Yorkers, too.

Now, with its apology, the Empire State Building’s social media team appears to be trying to get ahead of any potential controversy. That strategy, in fact, had started before the Birds even won.

“We will be lighting tonight for the winners of the AFC and NFC,” a message on the building’s X account read just after 5 p.m. “Please don’t yell at me.”
