How much does gas cost in Philly right now?

Drivers are getting just a bit of relief at the pump after record highs that eclipsed more than $5 per gallon last week. In Pennsylvania, the average price per gallon of regular unleaded gasoline on Tuesday was $5.01, with prices almost 60 cents higher in Philadelphia, according to AAA.

The national average was about $4.97.

That “could fall to $4.55-$4.75/gal in the weeks ahead,” according to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

Still, gas prices remained more than 50% higher than mid-June of last year, according to AAA, and drivers have been paying more to fill up than they have since June 2008, when the cost per gallon was $4.15 (or $5.43 when adjusted for inflation, as The Inquirer’s Andrew Maykuth reported).

Gasoline prices have been going up since December 2021 because of the rising cost of crude oil, which can fluctuate due to economic and political outlooks. In January, independent researchers at the U.S Department of Energy said they expected demand to go down, leading to lower gas prices through the spring. But then Russia invaded Ukraine, and the short-term outlook for crude oil changed.
