Center City traffic disruptions likely as Biden and Harris visit Philly on Friday

If you run into traffic issues around the Sheraton, located near 17th and Race Streets, Biden and Harris’ visit to the Democratic National Committee winter meeting is likely behind it.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will be in Philadelphia on Friday to attend several events.

Here is what you need to know about the visit:

Where will Biden and Harris be appearing?

Biden and Harris will arrive at the Philadelphia International airport at 2 p.m. and make a stop at the Belmont Water Treatment Plant at 3:15 p.m. for an infrastructure event.

The pair is then slated to attend the Democratic National Committee winter meeting, which is being held at the downtown Sheraton Hotel through Saturday, The Inquirer reported last week. The pair are also scheduled to take part in a fund-raiser.

Biden and Harris are slated to head to the airport at 7:10 p.m. and depart.

What will they be speaking about?

Biden and Harris’ visit to Philadelphia comes days before Biden’s State of the Union address, slated for Tuesday, and as the Biden administration and Democrats call attention to accomplishments during Biden’s first two years in office. Those have included efforts to promote green energy, set limitations on drug prices, and pass bipartisan laws related to infrastructure.

In an advisory last week, the White House said that Biden and Harris would focus on their economic record since taking office in 2020.

“They will discuss the progress we have made, and their work implementing the Biden-Harris economic agenda that continues to deliver results for the American people,” the White House said.

Additionally, Biden’s stop at the Democratic National Committee’s meeting in the city will likely be an important one. Members on Saturday will vote on a new 2024 primary calendar, which could change the order roster of early-voting states. Biden has proposed changes including moving South Carolina up in the primary process, and demoting Iowa.

Possible road closures

Road closures in and around Center City are likely Friday. The Philadelphia Police Department did not respond to requests for specifics on potential traffic issues related to Biden and Harris’ visit. Typically, authorities are not able to share details on potential closures and timings for security reasons.

Biden’s past Philly visits

Biden has made a number of visits to Philadelphia in the past year or so, most recently in November, when he spoke at the Liacouras Center just ahead of the midterm election.

In October, he and Harris spoke at the Democratic Party’s Independence Dinner at the Convention Center. In September, he spoke in front of Independence Hall. In June, he came to town for the AFL-CIO Constitutional Convention. In March, he appeared at the Hilton at Penn’s Landing to speak at the House Democratic Caucus Issues Conference. And in January 2022, the president and first lady Jill Biden appeared in Philadelphia in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Biden, a native of Scranton, his visited a number of other Pennsylvania locations since taking office, including stops in Delaware County, the Lehigh Valley, and Pittsburgh. Biden based his presidential campaign out of Philadelphia, and has regularly used Pennsylvania as a springboard for major efforts. The state continues to be a key political front leading up to 2024.
