Lady Gaga among the Oscar snubs this year

While House of Gucci was largely panned by critics, most expected Lady Gaga to receive a best actress nomination for her portrayal of Patrizia Reggiani, who was convicted of having the fashion heir killed in 1995. Instead, Gaga was one of a handful of Oscar snubs Tuesday morning.

Another was Leonardo DiCaprio, who missed out on his seventh acting Oscar nomination for his role as Dr. Randall Mindy in the satire Don’t Look Up. DiCaprio earned Golden Globe and British Academy Film Award nominations for his portrayal of a scientist warning of a impending comet strike, but was overlooked by the Academy.

The same goes for Frances McDormand, who took home an Oscar last year for Nomandland but didn’t garner a nomination for her portrayal as Lady Macbeth in Joel Coen’s Tragedy of Macbeth. Neither did The Passing star Ruth Negga, whom many critics considered a lock for a best supporting actress nomination.

Dune, the weird and complex sci-fi drama based on the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert, earned a best picture nomination. But director Denis Villeneuve’s direction didn’t garner a nomination.

It’s not all bad news for Villeneuve, who is still up for two Oscars for best picture (he was also a producer on the film) and best adapted screenplay. And trying to hear Leslie Jordan pronounce his name was the highlight of the nomination show.

A lower-profile snub was the documentary feature The Rescue, directed by previous Oscar winners Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. The Rescue — which chronicles the rescue of twelve boys and their coach from a flooded cave in northern Thailand — was considered a frontrunner for an Oscar nomination, but didn’t make the cut Tuesday morning.

Will Smith, Questlove lead group of Philly-area Oscar nominees

The City of Brotherly Love is well-represented among Tuesday’s list of 2022 Oscar nominees.

Leading the pack of local nominees is Philadelphia native Will Smith, who was nominated for best actor for his role playing tennis father Richard Williams in King Richard. Smith has been nominated twice before for best actor — in 2007 for The Pursuit of Happyness and in 2002 for Ali — but has yet to win an Oscar.

Smith had a complicated relationship with his own father, bolstering his performance: During an interview at The Met Philadelphia in November, Smith said he owes his strong work ethic and determination to his father, but he was also deathly afraid of the man he called Daddio, an angry alcoholic who was abusive to Smith’s mother.

“My father was my hero,” Smith told the audience. “Adversity and perseverance go together. My father was both things. He was a complicated person. He was the greatest hero, and one of the greatest aspects of my life. He was also one of my greatest sources of pain.”

Smith was also an executive producer on King Richard, meaning he could potentially take home two Academy Awards next month.

It was also a big morning for Questlove, the popular drummer from The Roots and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Questlove, whose real name is Ahmir Thompson, was nominated for best documentary feature for Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), his insightful look at the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. Summer of Soul is also up for a Grammy Award for best music film.

Questlove, who served as a music consultant and voice actor on last year’s Pixar film Soul, was initially reluctant to direct the film. But he told the Inquirer his need to tell the Harlem Cultural Festival story hit home when he was reading Prince’s posthumous memoir The Beautiful Ones.

“He talks about this moment with his dad taking him to see the Woodstock movie when he was 11, and how that changes his life. He knew instantly: That’s what I’m going to do. And I thought, ‘Whoa, what if this film had existed then?’ Think of the millions of other kids that this could have affected.”

Malvern-native Adam McKay, best known for directing Will Ferrell comedies like Anchorman and Step Brothers, was nominated for best original screenplay for the Netflix dark comedy Don’t Look Up. The story was co-written by David Sirota, who grew up in Montgomery County. Don’t Look Up was also nominated for best picture, but McKay didn’t receive a best director nomination.

Havertown-native Elizabeth Mirzaei earned an Oscar nomination for the short documentary Three Songs for Benazir, which she directed alongside her husband, Gulistan. The film, which is available to stream on Netflix, follows an Afghan newlywed named Shaista and the choices he must make to build a life with his pregnant wife, Benazir.

“We feel like it’s really important to tell this story of a firsthand account from Afghanistan, especially at a time when these accounts are getting harder and harder to get out of the country,” the couple told Variety.

Oscar nominations 2022: What to expect

Academy Award nominations will be announced Tuesday morning, likely proving what we already know: This was yet another strange year for the movies.

Fluctuating coronavirus variants contributed to unpredictable theatergoing habits and a consequential boost in streaming releases. Those who did feel comfortable heading to their local multiplex turned out in droves for Spider-Man: No Way Home, somehow rendering films like Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story an underdog at the box office.

Steven Spielberg! An underdog! What a world we live in.

Best picture seems a tossup between Kenneth Branagh’s autobiographical drama Belfast and Jane Campion’s slow-burning western The Power of the Dog, the latter — distributed by Netflix — just one of several streamable titles to attract awards buzz this year. Previous Oscar winners Nicole Kidman and Olivia Colman are neck and neck for best actress (having starred in Being the Ricardos and The Lost Daughter, respectively), while The Power of the Dog lead Benedict Cumberbatch and King Richard star Will Smith will probably face off in the best actor category.

The 94th Academy Awards air March 27 at 8 p.m. on ABC. The ceremony, which will take place at the Dolby Theatre, will feature a host for the first time since 2018, though they have not yet said who will take up the mantle.

What’s changed with Oscar’s best picture category this year?

Does 'Spiderman: No Way Home' have a shot at a best picture nomination?Matt Kennedy/Sony Pictures / MCT

The Academy Awards change more than the public might realize.

Every year the academy’s leadership board reviews categories and potential changes. That’s meant some categories — juvenile acting, dance direction and split winners for black-and-white and color films — have gone away. Best picture, film’s highest honor, frequently gets reviewed. Remember the brief moment not too long ago when there was going to be a popular Oscar category?

This year one such change takes effect: 10 best picture contenders will be announced Tuesday morning. For the past decade, it’s been a sliding range of five to 10 nominees. Most years had eight or nine.

The move isn’t unprecedented. The academy has shifted the number of best picture nominees several times. In the 1930s and early 1940s, eight to 12 films could be nominated in any given year. In 1944, it shifted to five and in 2009 it was expanded to 10. Then, in 2011, they went to five to 10.

Despite the expanded list, the biggest blockbuster of the pandemic, Spider-Man: No Way Home, doesn’t seem to have much of a chance at a best picture nomination anymore considering it didn’t get a Producers Guild nod. Same for the James Bond pic No Time To Die. But there could be surprises on Tuesday morning.
