Authorities say an 18-year-old died at a New Jersey beach when a large hole he and his sister were digging in the sand collapsed
TOMS RIVER, N.J. — An 18-year-old man died at a New Jersey beach on Tuesday when a large hole he and his sister were digging in the sand collapsed, police said. His 17-year-old sister was also trapped in the hole, but was rescued.
The Toms River Police Department identified the young man as Levi Caverly. He and his family were visiting the Jersey Shore from Union, Maine, police said.
Caverly’s Facebook showed he was a recent graduate of Mid-Coast School of Technology, where he was involved in the school’s award-winning robotics team. He also was an avid drum player.
Police, first responders and emergency personnel from neighboring towns responded to a call for help that came in at around 4 p.m.
Toms River Mayor Mo Hill told NBC New York that the siblings had used Frisbees to dig to dig the hole.
