Aqua America Inc., the Bryn Mawr water utility that operates in eight states, announced Tuesday it has surpassed the million-customer count with the acquisition of 3,000 new water and wastewater customers in Peotone, Ill., for $12.3 million.
Aqua, which was known as Philadelphia Suburban Corp. before 2004, now owns and operates about 1,700 water and wastewater systems. The acquisition of the systems in Peotone, a village about 43 miles south of Chicago, will be folded into Aqua Illinois.
The company is awaiting regulatory approval and closure of three wastewater system acquisitions in the Philadelphia area, including Cheltenham, East Bradford and New Garden Townships, which will add about 23,000 new customer connections.
