A 25-year-old man walking a dog was fatally shot during an apparent robbery attempt Wednesday evening in the city’s Brewerytown section, police said.

Shortly before 7 p.m., the man was at 31st and Jefferson Streets about a block from his home when he was approached by two males, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Surveillance video shows that one male put a gun to his chest while the other walked behind the victim and reached into his waist area, possibly his pockets, Small said. One shot was fired and the males then ran away.

Police found the man lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was still clutching the dog’s leash and also was holding a phone. Police rushed him to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced at 7:30.

Police found one spent shell casing on the sidewalk, Small said.

People who knew the victim came to the scene afterward and took possession of the dog, Small said.
