Man, 25, fatally shot in Old City
At least 30 shots were fired during an ambush on the 300 block of Chestnut Street.
A 25-year-old man was fatally wounded in an ambush shooting Monday night in the Old City section of Philadelphia, police said.
Just before 9:30 p.m., Jhalil Shands, 25, was walking with a woman on the 300 block of Chestnut Street when a minivan pulled up and four males got out and started shooting, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.
Shands, a resident of North Philadelphia, was hit numerous times in front of the Science History Institute and less than half a block away from the popular Buddakan restaurant. Shands was pronounced dead at the scene by medics at 9:33.
Police found at least 30 spent shell casings — some just inches from his body.
“They came right up on him,” Small said of the shooters.
The assailants then got back into the gold-or silver-colored minivan and drove away north on Third Street.
The woman was not injured.
Detectives were interviewing witnesses and checking surveillance cameras in the area for possible video of the shooting or suspects, Small said.
