Man arrested after alleged racial incident in Chinatown
Police said they used a Taser to subdue the suspect.
Philadelphia police said a man was subdued with a Taser and arrested after he allegedly shouted anti-Asian remarks and assaulted a 64-year-old man of Asian descent Tuesday night in the city’s Chinatown neighborhood.
The victim was not injured, police said.
About 7:40 p.m., police responded to numerous reports of an assault outside on the 300 block of North 10th Street. Police said the suspect was struck twice by Taser and then transported to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for a mental-health evaluation.
On Sunday, a 27-year-old woman of Asian descent was hospitalized after a man walked up to her on a Chinatown sidewalk, hit her in the face, and walked away. The attack was caught on surveillance cameras, and police said they arrested the man shortly after the attack.
The incidents come amid increasing reports nationally of anti-Asian violence.
