A 21-year-old man was fatally shot inside the Philadelphia Mills mall late Monday afternoon in Northeast Philadelphia, police said. He was later identified as Dominic Billa.

Around 5 p.m., police responded to a reported shooting inside the mall and found the man on the ground in the food court area with several gunshots wounds to his chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.

Police said a single shooter fled the scene. The mall was placed on lockdown, but people who had locked themselves inside individual stores were later told by police it was safe to leave and were escorted out by police.

On Tuesday morning, District Attorney Larry Krasner identified Billa in a statement and said that he was the stepson of a county detective assigned to my Homicide/Non-Fatal Shooting Unit. “I extend my deepest condolences to our Detective, and to the loved ones of Mr. Billa. We are outraged over the violence that claimed the life of this young man,” Krasner said in a statement. “Shopping malls, basketball courts, supermarkets, and all spaces in our communities should be free of the threat of gun violence.”
