A formal postal union official in South Jersey pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court in Camden to embezzling $34,000 in union funds, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito said.

Robert Peter, 58, of Sicklerville, was secretary-treasurer for Postal Workers Local 526 when he stole the funds, including $12,000 in cash from ATMs in Atlantic City, Carpenito said. The union represents 900 workers.

Peter pleaded guilty to one count of embezzling and is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 26.
