Roundtrip, a Philadelphia company that created an app for medical providers to digitally coordinate patient rides, has received $5.1 million in venture capital.

It plans to use the fresh capital to build out its software capabilities and hire sales, engineering, and account management personnel, the company said Wednesday.

Leading the Series A round of fundraising was Motley Fool Ventures, of Alexandria, Va. Existing Roundtrip investors Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University also participated.

Mark Switaj, a former emergency medical technician, founded Roundtrip in Philadelphia in 2016 to “rewrite the playbook” on patient transportation for the underprivileged and the elderly, an area dogged by inefficiency.

“The problem is real and it’s pervasive: the riders’ unique needs and medical transportation providers’ capabilities have been siloed and misrepresented, resulting in upwards of 30% missed medical appointments in the U.S. alone," Switaj said in a statement.

Roundrip employs 26 in offices in Philadelphia and Richmond, Va., and plans to more than double in size.
