A son of Philadelphia Sheriff Jewell Williams was critically wounded late Friday afternoon in a double shooting that left the second victim dead.

The sheriff’s son was shot five times just before 5:30 p.m. on the 3100 block of North 16th Street. Barbara Grant, a spokesperson for the sheriff, confirmed that one of his sons had been shot and was in the hospital. A police source confirmed that it was Jewell Williams Jr., 39.

The second victim, a 37-year-old man, was rushed by police to Temple University Hospital with several bullet wounds and was pronounced dead at 5:47 p.m.

Williams Jr. was shot twice in the left side of his back, twice in his left arm, and twice in his left leg, police said.

No further information on the shooting or a possible motive was immediately available.

The elder Williams, a former state legislator, was elected sheriff in 2011 and was reelected in 2015, but failed in his bid for a third term in May when he lost in the Democratic primary.
