Cartoon: Arkansas’ governor vs. anti-trans law

When a bill to block medical providers from delivering gender-affirming health care to transgender people under age 18 reached the desk of Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, he vetoed it—”a rare Republican rejection amid the growing conservative effort to restrict transgender people’s health care and participation in society,” Maggie Astor reported for the New York Times. Here King Features Syndicate cartoonist Darrin Bell suggests Hutchinson’s move was as surprising as seeing pigs fly. But this defense of trans rights didn’t last: the Arkansas legislature voted on April 6 to override the veto, making their state the first nationwide to outlaw gender-affirming treatment for trans youth.
