William “Cody” Anderson, 78, an iconic leader in Black radio in Philadelphia, died Feb. 20 of complications from COVID-19. In addition to cohosting Electric Magazine on Saturday mornings on WURD 96.1 FM/900 AM, he had been the first general manager at WURD, the only African American-owned-and-operated talk radio station in Pennsylvania, as the Inquirer obituary for Anderson reported. He also cohosted the weekly Laborer’s Live show on Friday afternoons and biweekly Saturday morning shows with City Council President Darrell L. Clarke and Philadelphia School Superintendent William R. Hite Jr.

Sharing her drawn remembrance of Anderson, former Daily News and Inquirer cartoonist Signe Wilkinson noted: “He championed our schools and encouraged our students. He’s passed his microphone on to them.”
