The 2019 primary is a tale of two council races: the exciting, vibrant newcomers bringing energy to the at-large race, and the soporific district races, which could end up with reelected incumbents in every seat — including the seat of Bobby Henon, who was indicted in a federal corruption case a few months ago and is running unopposed. All ten incumbents are seeking reelection, with only five challenged.

We invited candidates in those districts to answer a questionnaire and participate in an endorsement interview.

Curtis Jones Jr., our pick for the Fourth district, has been a champion on criminal justice reform on City Council since his election in 2008. He championed the ban-the-box legislation that prohibits employers from asking about criminal justice records in the early steps of hiring, pushed for more funding for the Police Advisory Commission, and introduced the resolution to abolish cash bail.

Ronald James Adams, an operations manager with the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas program, can name many of the city’s problems but doesn’t have many specific solutions to offer.
